So I finally got myself sorted and went in to donate blood this week – and failed miserably, twice.
I had forgotten about all the questions - sex, drugs, promiscuity and travel related. In the section about travel to the UK I ticked yes because I am lucky enough to be one of those people who did a two year OE. I hadn’t realised till I was filling in the form, that it was nearly 20 years ago! So I am discussing my answers pre donation and learn that due to mad cow disease and my longer than six months stay in the UK, that I was banned FOR LIFE from donating blood! Well I have to admit to being very disappointed but held my head high, took my o+ keyring and headed home.
Then I got thinking – was it 1995 that I left NZ? 20 years is a long time and ones memory fades. In my case dramatically. I managed to find my old passport and discovered that I actually left NZ May 1997.
I then realised I had to go back as my file had been tagged “Declined for life” and I needed to change my status. As well as get back on the horse and actually get my donation done. Not a thing anyone enjoys but a simple act that more of us should be doing.
Second time around I get asked about wellness in our household – or in my case – recent unwellness with the kids. I now know that a minimum of 4 weeks needs to pass before your blood can be collected. And that was how my attempt to donate blood ended.
Better luck next time for me – and heads up to anyone thinking about donating. If you were in the UK during 1995 or 1996 for longer than six months or if anyone in your house has been unwell 4-6 weeks prior – you will be sent away. But you do still get offered a cup of tea and biccy for your attempt.
I hope you are more successful than me! Check out the website for more information.
